The academics sector plays an important role for the economical development. For this reason, studying, researching and developing are priorities in Graz. Due to the high density of educational and research institutions, the requirements for further developments are met. Approximately 61,000 students and 5,600 researchers study and work at eight institutions of higher education (4 universities, 2 universities of applied sciences and 2 universities of education). Additionally, the non-university research is also strongly represented, for instance Joanneum Research, Austria’s second largest non-university research institution. The density of competence centres in Styria is by far the largest in Austria, most of them located in Graz. A research and development rate of 4.3% puts Styria, and especially the metropolitan area of Graz, on the top within Austria.
